Greenfield is a small town in Northern California, located about an hour's drive from San Francisco. It was founded by brothers Isaac and George Greenfield in 1859 as a trading post on the Sacramento River. The present-day town was named after them in 1867. The first settler in Greenfield was Amos Butterworth, who arrived in 1859. Butterworth built a log cabin on the east side of the river and named his settlement after himself and his family. By 1870, there were fifteen residents living in Greenfield. The next year, Butterworth sold his holdings to John Sutter and began farming at what is now the eastern edge of town. In 1872, Sutter erected a large adobe house at the junction of Butternut Street and Main Street to serve as the village hall for Greenfield. Over time, Greenfield grew more important as a commercial center due to its location on the confluence of several riverside valleys which facilitated trade with surrounding villages. In 1915, Greenfield became part of san Francisco when it was annexed by that city through Proposition 8 (a measure passed by voters that amended state law to allow San Francisco to annex other towns without their consent). From then until 1978, Greenfield lay within the boundaries of San Francisco County. In 1978, however, county government was restructured into Fresno County and portions of San Francisco County were transferred to that county. As a result of this change, much of Silicon Valley—including parts of Fremont and Oakland—became outside Of San Francisco County’s jurisdiction
