At that time it extended northeast from present-day Utopia Parkway eastward to include all or part of Present Day Highland Heights (northwest corner), Potrero Hill (east corner), MidtownSan Francisco (southwest corner), Oakland (northwest border) and several smaller townships including Englewood (southwestern border) while Redwood Shores lay just south of today's northbound I-280 exit ramp off I-580 west of Highway 1/I-680 Alternate called "Rincon Valley". rancho Rincon del Norte comprised over 6 square miles (.20 km²). "Rincon Valley" became "Highland Heights", which are still used this way today among many people who live thereabouts." In 1888, when Southern Pacific Railroad built its line through Highland Heights, it shortened its name to "San Francisco" but kept "Rincon Valley". In 1937 A&P supermarket opened in downtown San Francisco and moved out into Rincon Valley where it remains until this day..,"A&P" stands for American Eagle Outfitters which left town about 1984 when local business owners decided not to deal with Chain Stores because those stores shared Frito Lay products - making them unprofitable for their small business owners." By then other big box stores had started up such as Home Depot which opened a store next door in 1990}}, Sears went open across the street in 1995.}], Kmart followed suit five years later}]. Today San Fran has more than 20 major retail anchors with over $100 billion worth of sales within its boundaries.}}.

The area now includes parts of Los Angeles and Riverside Counties, as well as San Bernardino County. The first European settlers included members of the Spanish Empire, who arrived in 1769. In 1821, Mexico ceded control of California to United States after a series of Mexican-American Wars. The U.S. military built Fort Bearss on what is now the edge of Los Angeles County in 1827 to protect American settlers from Mexican forces.
