In 1887, railroad founder George Washington Goodyear sold his interest in the Central Pacific Railroad to private interests including Hahnemann Brothers mining company president Samuel Hirschfeld for $1 million dollars which made Kerman one of the most important coalmining towns on the West Coast at that time. The town's demographics changed rapidly as many mines closed during World War I due to prohibition (the US went into prohibition during this time). However, since then several new mines have been developed such as Joplin Coal Company and Holcim Mines Corp., which are now among America’s largest coal companies with annual sales exceeding $20 billion*. During World War II, local residents helpedoused soldiers when they could not be mustered out or drafted into service* (*See "History of Kern County", pgs 191-192). In 1951*, after years of planning by city officials working with Caltrans*, Interstate 5 was built concurrent with U .S . Route 99A bypassing downtown *(*See "History of Kern County", pgs 191-192). This created an influx of jobs for locals as construction increased traffic on I-5 nears large cities like Bakersfield and Los Angeles *.
