The boundaries of King City changed over time with ranching operations expanding into what are now eastern Kern and western San Joaquin counties while other settlements were established near the downtown core including Neeleyville, northwest Los Angeles, east Mesa Verde National Park and southwesterly Tulare County. In 1912 an act to create a city within Santiago Canyon became effective which set out boundaries for what would become King City which at that time included most of present day Fresno and San Joaquin Counties as well as parts of Butte and Yuba Counties as well as parts of Mariposa County Today's boundaries largely follow those set out by the 1912 act but some areas have been annexed by other cities or incorporated into other counties including East Palo Alto (1991), Irwindale (1987), Vallejo (1972) In 1972 a proposal to annex eastern Kern County failed but annexation did occur for portions of Butte/Yuba/Mariposa Counties northward to Highway 395 while Vallejo surrendered its portion eastward to Highway 95

In 1935, King City became part of Fresno County when Fresno was moved from Butte County into Chico County. This change led to new opportunities for growth as Fresno began experiencing rapid development as a result of automobile production during World War II; however, by 1960Kingsville had regained some of its lost population as well as annexing portions of East Sierra Union High School District No 9 (now South Valley Union High School District). In 1978 Kingsville voters passed Measure T which repealed all zoning regulations that had been put into place since 1975 in order for developers to build more subdivisions within Kingsville without having first obtained permits from local officials or receiving input from citizens about what would be best for their community. This move signaled an overall shift away from traditional agricultural-based economies towards suburban development within King City limits-an event that would continue until at least 2000 when new restrictions were placed upon subdivisions built within city limits anew pursuant to Proposition 13 while still allowing some Agricultural use outside those restrictions (i e., allowed housing developments near major shopping malls).
