The town has a population of just over 10,000 people and it is the most populous community within the city of Irvine. The towns namesake comes from Spanish word miradar which means "to see." La Mirada was founded on July 1, 1911 by residents of Mission Viejo who petitioned the state legislature to make their communities part of Irvine. On December 2, 1912, voters in La Mirada passed an ordinance authorizing incorporation as a city. At first, only men could vote and all property deeds were issued with titles such as "section or lot" rather than "township," which indicated that the land belonged to single individuals. In 1915, Mayor Lorenzo Richardson changed these rules so that women could vote and purchase property in LaMirada. In 1928-29 local granite was used to create one of the first sea walls along Interstate 5 in Southern California when road barriers were built at several locations including downtown LA and Anaheim Hills; this wall still stands today as a tourist attraction called “The Wall”. According to The LA Times , “the climate hereabouts (of) gentle warmth with periodic showers makes swimming possible year-round without wetting clothes – something that would be hard enough even during summertime without also having to worry about keeping up with waves crashing against shorelines running out more than 20 feet into deep water” & “There’s no need for any special equipment: just put on your swimsuit and step into the ocean – you won’t regret it!” As coastal communities continue to grow throughout Southern California there are concerns about lack of fresh water resources being able to meet demands for growth while ecologically sensitive areas are struggling with rapid development or loss of plant life due ocean acidification

In 1849, José María Cisneros, a Spanish American landowner in Rancho Los Nietos, located in present-day La Mirada, California began the process of purchasing 2,500 acres of what is now known as the San Fernando Valley. The property included a small piece of land east of Interstate 5 and south of Topanga Canyon Boulevard. In 1852 he named the area Mirada after his wife's birthplace in Italia—a location near Rome that was then an important center for luxury goods trade. The name stuck and today it is one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations. The first house on the site was built by Cisneros' son-in-law Manuel Nieto in 1875. A year later another house was erected by Mexican immigrant Antonio Zamora. The town slowly grew around these homes and businesses until it attained semi-urban status with the arrival of autos in 1915. During World War II,Mirada became a key military base for the United States because it offered easy access to airfields across southern California. After hostilities ended,Mirada reverted back to its agricultural roots with a focus on citrus production until becoming classified as an officiallydry community in 1976 due to declines in farming activity statewide during that period. Today Mirada is still home to many local businesses such as La Quinta Inn & Spa and Banning Mills Brewery; while also hosting annual events such as Festival de la Lucha Libre (the world's largest street fair), Carrera de las Flores showgirls pageant and Jazz at the Arcará Ballroom which has been held every January since 1978.
