Lakewood, California is a city in San Diego County, California and the administrative center of the Urban Area of San Diego. As of the 2010 census, its population was 69,471. Lakewood is located on an agricultural district that has been inhabited for over 10,000 years by Chumash and other Native Americans. The first Europeans to come to this area were Spanish explorers who landed in 1769. In 1821 Lakewood became part of Rancho Cucamonga; it reverted to Mexican jurisdiction in 1846. In 1875, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a canal across San Diego Bay to provide water supplies for Valley Park and other projects in downtown San Diego. The city became a town on December 12, 1879 under City charter No. 5887; it lost its charter on July 1, 1886 when it was annexed into the larger San Diego County

Lakewood is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 22,727 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in California and the second-largest in San Diego County. It was founded by Mexicans who arrived during the Gold Rush era as part of the wave of migration to Southern California that began in 1846. The first permanent residents were Anglo Californians called "The Pioneers." The city's name comes from two sources: Lakewood Ranch and Lakewood Hill. The ranch was located on what is now West Park Avenue, between 17th Street and 19th Street in central business district (Condo) #1; and Hillcrest Road ran north-south along Artesia Creek just east of I-5 near its current site at 9600 block of Park Boulevard. both names are still used today within their respective boundaries with some variations reflecting their original pronunciation while others have been anglicized to more modern sounds. In 1856, gold was found on El Cajon Mesa near downtown Los Angeles and soon after, work began on building a road from Sierra Vista to sell this new discovery to travelers passing through eastern San Bernardino Valley for transportation to Los Angeles then up into Orange County for goods or services before returning downriver again for shipping back out to sea. This route became known as State Route 66 which passed through present day Lakewood on its way from Pasadena southward until it crossed Interstate 5 south of downtown LA in 1968 when SR 66 was redesignated US 101 It wasn't until 1907 that a post office called Lakewood opened under jurisdiction of San Bernardino County based out of an old stagecoach station where mail was delivered until 1959 when all local mail moving within county limits ended at Long Beach Municipal Airport adjacent to Long Beach City Hall The population growth rate throughout most of the 20th century paralleled that of Southern California combined so there wasn’t really any need for another town/city established outside Southland far beyond what had already been developed including Otay Mesa (1935), La Jolla (1948), Escondido (1963), Daly City (1964), Carlsbad Caverns Open Space Reserve (1986), etcetera but due primarily because Interstate 5 traversed almost immediately adjacent thereto making it easy for people living close together – especially during container shipping times – various attempts were made over time culminating with incorporation by proclamation effective January 1st 1960 under Mayor Dick Raymond who first proposed incorporation only days after successfully running for re-election against incumbent Bob Willis . Incorporation did not receive final approval until November 11th 1969 following passage by voters via referendum thus providing annexation authority over unincorporated areas eastward along I-5 extending all the way past southeastern Torrance making much needed peaceable neighborhood habitat alongside rapidly growing DTLA thereby improving quality life opportunities around core neighborhoods even as neighboring communities grew increasingly frustrated with what they perceived as one sided development processes without ever achieving annexation status itself despite petitions being presented annually since then .. finally On July 1st 1984 incorporation occurred via ordinance following purchase by citizens Roy Jansen, Donny Kappin & Kathy Kappin from Raymond family members trust

Lakewood was founded in 1876 by three men who were looking for a place to live and work. The town was named after the large body of water that lay between it and Los Angeles, which at the time was a small village. It wasn't until 1912 that the name Lakewood was changed to its current form because of the growth of Hollywood. The first businesses in Lakewood were grocery stores, lumberyards, and other necessary businesses needed to support the growing population. The first movie theater in Lakewood opened in 1924 and quickly became one of Los Angeles' most popular attractions. In 1951, stereo sound began to be adopted as an industry standard and new theaters began popping up all over California. By 1975, Lakewood had become home to over 20 theaters including six movie palaces! During the early years of video gaming there were only a few places in California where you could purchase games, but by 1992 there were dozens of game stores across North America available on cassette tapes! In 1995, CD-ROMs became common with arcade games becoming more difficult to come by due to technological advancements. Today, many people enjoy playing video games at home or out at a public park like Pasadena's Arroyo Park even though they may not have access to an arcade! Today, Lakewood is still one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with active businesses and families living close together within walking distance of each other. Some would say that it has lost some its soul since suburban sprawl took hold throughout much of LA County during the late 1990s/early 2000s but I believe that if you take a walk around town you'll see just how excited everyone is about their community - from small business owners who are adapting successfully to digital times (like our own Michael Pineda), all the way up through elected officials who are fighting for what makes this area so special (like Mayor Pro Tem Kevin Faulconer). What started as just two men looking for a place to live has turned into something incredible - something we can all be proudof!
Lakewood was founded in 1879 by C.F. Smith and named for him, Lakewood Hill. It was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1881. The post office at the time was known as "Lakewood". In 1915, it became the home of the United States Military Academy at West Point. On July 6, 1933, it merged with Pomona to form the City of Pomona.
