George Lemon served as Postmaster from that date until 1893 when he moved to Redding to serve as Postmaster there. In 1909, Lemon Grove had three stores and one school - both are now gone but their memories live on in the nearby communities of Modesto and Arroyo Grande. In 1916, George Lemon donated land east of town for a new high school which would later be named after him - George Lemon High School remains today a part of the local community. In 1922, work began on building what would become known as the largest dam ever constructed in Kern County - it became known as Lake Oroville Dam. During World War II, many of the workers who contributed to the war effort in California were recruited from Lemon Grove. After the war ended, many of these same workers started new businesses and continued to live and work in Lemon Grove. Lemon Grove experienced another growth spurt during this time, with more businesses opening up and people moving into the area for a second time. By 1973, Lemon Grove had reached its current size and status as a city.
