Long Beach, California is a city in Southern California on the Pacific Ocean. The population was 381,737 as of 2018. It is located in Orange County and has a total area of about 232 square miles (.827 km²). The town started as a small settlement called "Beachwood" on August 24, 1870, when construction began on the then-new Long Beach Terminal Railroad. By 1886, it had grown to become one of the largest towns in southern California. The name "Long Beach" originated with Charles W. Long who donated land for the town and named it after his hometown of Louth, England. The first post office opened in 1892 and was known as "Beachwood". In 1907, the name was changed to "Long Beach". The first real industry to come to Long Beach was fishing; however, this soon faded away due to competition from neighboring Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. However, because of its location near Los Angeles Harbor and access to water resources harbors such as Venice and Dana Point became important boosters of Long Beach's development over time. In 1909–10 at the request of Mayor John Sennett (the first black mayor in Los Angeles), dredging began on what would later become Neptune Avenue between Harbor Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard in order to form an artificial beach which would make Long Beach more accessible for shipping traffic essential for economic development. Eventually this beach became known simply as “Neptune Avenue” or simply “The Beaches” due largely to efforts by developer Harry Blackstone III who wanted developments along that street including a large hotel he built called Regency House on Broadwalk (later rebranded Regency West Hotel). It should be noted that while much infrastructure - such as seaports - were developed during this time period around Long BEACHESIDE...these are not generally considered part of today's downtown area which straddles both sides of NEPTUNE AVE...and extends all the way back TO THE GARDENS OF LONG BEACH HARBOR! They erected a cross on Point Mugu and continued north along what is now State Route 163 to White Sands beach where they built their own shipyard and began exporting goods from Mexico On November 8, 1847 Captain William Halsey who had been commandant at San Diego arrived at anchor off Long Beach with USS Constitution under Captains David Dixon Porter and Nathaniel Parsons in company. He reported that he had found goldiscovered in this locality about 43 miles (70 km) northeast of Los Angeles. A group led by Commodore John Doolittle chartered USS Enterprise to explore this claim but no development occurred until 1859 when an American party led by Colonel Augustus Mitchell struck gold near today’s North Park beach while exploring for silver Mines on October 17th . This discovery led to the name “Gold Rush” being given to Long Beach because so much valuable property was taken up in those days mainly due to gold alone! In 1860 $3 million worth of GOLD was mined in Southern California! At first it seemed that all these new settlers were coming solely for the Gold rush but over time other reasons such as agricultural improvements etc also became important reasons for people moving into Long Beach including myriads of jobs opened up with quick growth once railroads came through town which eventually made transportation possible especially for young families like myself growing up during that time
