The first shooting galleries were opened in the early 1800s, and the sport gained popularity in the late 1800s as shooters from around the country came to compete. The first Targets International Shooting Championships were held at what is now Hollywood Bowl in 1951, and gun target shooting has continued to grow in popularity ever since. The history of gun target shooting can be traced back to when riflemen and artillerymen used rifle ranges across Southern California as training grounds for their skills. By 1860,gun range operators had started renting property north of downtown Los Angeles so they could offer classes and demonstrations to local Gunsmiths’ Associations (GSA) members. In 1892, GSA member John Smeaton organized an international tournament at his ranch south of LAX that drew competitors from all over North America. From then on,gun target shootings would become an annual event attended by thousands of people from all walks of life. In 1951, Targets International Shooting Championship was founded at Hollywood Bowl as one of the earliest events associated withguntargetshooting today. It was through this event that pistol target shooters began to gain prominence as well; until then, only rifles were allowed to be shot at these competitions. As Pistol Target Shooters became more popular than RifleTargetshooters during this time period, new venues were developed throughout Southern California specifically devotedtothis sport: Lakeridge Park near Pasadena in 1955 (now called Arboretum), Calabasas Range on Olympic Boulevard west of UCLA in 1957 (now known as La Brea Tar Heel), East Valley Racetrack on Sepulveda Boulevard east of Westwood Village in 1961 (now known as Willowbrook), and finally Beverly Hills Golf Course off Wilshire Boulevard east of Century City in 1974 (now known as Cresent Gardens). For several decades following its creation, Los Angeles experienced steady growth as a center for business and culture. On July 4th, 1901 – more than 100 years after it was founded – Los Angeles received its charter from US President Theodore Roosevelt as a city under his jurisdiction. At this point it had become one of North America’s largest metropolitan areas with over 1 million residents living within its boundaries! During World War II (1939-1945), much effort was put into improving infrastructure such as transportation and housing so that Angelenos could participate fully in wartime efforts; however, due largely to economic instability caused by hyperinflation during those yearsöthe city fell into decline again beginning in the 1970s until recentgentrification initiatives have reversed some long-term trends

Los Angeles was founded in 1781 as the small Spanish town of Gilroy. The area now known as Los Angeles County was first settled by the Tongva people, who called it "hohokam" or "place where the green plants grow." In 1847, Los Angeles became a part of Mexico and was renamed Ciudad Juárez. It reverted to its original name in 1848 when American soldiers burned down the Mexican city. In 1851, California gold seekers found some of the most valuable gold mines in California and named their new settlement after San Pedro Sula, the capital of Honduras at that time. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of over 100,000 people. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many men from Southern California volunteered for service in the Union army and many businesses were destroyed or abandoned due to war-time competition from munitions makers in New York City. After Reconstruction (1868-1912) ended with white flight to rural areas, downtown Los Angeles slowly declined until it regained some stability during World War II (1939-1945). Today's Chinatown is one of LA's oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods
