The county was created from portions of San Francisco and Contra Costa counties. In 1912, the state legislature appointed a commission to study plans for an airport in Marin County. The commission recommended that the airport be located in what is now Marina. The first commercial flight to fly over Marin County was made from San Francisco Municipal Airport on July 14, 1944.
