Martinez, California is the birthplace of ammunition. The first firearms were created there in 1855 by a group of men who gathered around Captain George Armstrong Custer to help him lead his cavalry unit in an Expedition to the Dakota Hills. They were using emergency rounds that had been designed and made specifically for this purpose. The first cartridges used in firearms were called "pistol bullets." These were little more than small balls of lead or other metal that could be fired from a pistol with a round-pointed barrel. In 1857, Captain John Brownell developed what became known as the "BB" cartridge, which was capable of firing core rounds that carried more kinetic energy than ordinary bullets. This gave pistols and rifles a greater range and ability to penetrate deep into enemy targets. In 1875, Martinez residents Josiah Gregg and Hiram Maxim developed the first effective rifle ammunition, which they named "Metropolitan." This type of ammunition was able to kill large animals much more effectively than traditional shot or ball ammunition. It quickly became one of the most popular types of ammo available on American battlefields. During World War II, munitions manufacturers located in Martinez helped contribute significantly to America's military success by developing new methods of storing and dispensing munitions such as TNT and incendiary shells. By 1945, Martinez had become one of the most important production sites for munitions in California because it supplied not just local businesses but also U.S.-based factories with essential supplies during wartime times

In 1957,[1] Martinez was granted city status by Governor Ronald Reagan[2] making it one of only two cities in California that have this distinction[3]. Martinez, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. Martinez was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1849. The town's name comes from a rancho that José María Martinez owned. Martinez was part of Yolo County until 1850 and then Californios took over much of the county seat, including Martinez. In 1851, the US government acquired all of California and made it an territory with its own government. This created a problem for Martinez because it wasn't given any land within the new state boundaries. The US Department of Interior decided to give some land to Yolo County instead so that it could help support the local population during this time period when there was much migration into California from other parts of America. In 1861, after two years of wrangling between Mexico and America, Texas Annexed California as part of the Texas Revolution against American rule over what had once been Mexico (the Mexicans had also revolted against Spanish rule). As soon as this happened, many Mexicans who were living in northern Mexico started moving back eastward towards Santa Clara County in order to join their kinfolk here under Texan protection. Among these newcomers were José María Martinez and his family who arrived just before Mexican Independence on December 16th1861. The first white people to live in Martinez were prospectors who discovered gold near San Rafael Hill in 1858-59; they named the area "Higgins" after Captain John Higginson who explored the area for them while mining claims nearby (he is buried at Mountain View Cemetery). By 1865, most miners had left for good but a few families remained behind to tend farmlands around Higginsville until 1870 when water supplies dwindled so hard that some abandoned their homes and returned home only weeks later finding their property taken by others looking to expand irrigation systems southward into what is now Fresno County (they eventually got back) . It wasn't until 1862 that Colonel John Broughton became head resident physician for Kern County which included portions now inside Yolo and San Bernardino Counties before becoming colonel general during Ulysses S Grant's Overland Campaigns leading up to Abraham Lincoln's victory at Gettysburg two years later – making him one of first Americans ever born outside North America (in fact he still lives in Berkeley today). After being wounded at Appomattox Court House he retired from military service but not before giving directions on how cavalry should be used if Indians attempt armed resistance against Union forces … such directives led directly to General Grant's punitive Expedition through central CA known as "The Great Train Robbery" conducted July-August 1863 along Railroad Corridor between Stockton/Lodi Junction & Menlo Park….This event lessened hostilities rather than ended them
