The city was founded in 1846 by Mariano Martinez and his family as an agricultural town on Rancho San Luis Rey. In 1868, Martinez sold what is now Martinez to Alameda County for $1 million. The city was renamed Oakland after General George Custer during World War II.

In 1847, José Martinez and his brother Vicente founded the town of Martinez in what is now Fresno County, California. The two brothers were the first to settle in what is now Fresno County and they named their new community after their father-in-law, José María de la Biblia. In 1850, a post office was established in Martinez and by 1852, the population had grown to about 50 people. The first store in Martinez opened its doors on October 6, 1852. By 1870, the town had a school and five churches. In 1877, Martinez became part of the United States when it was acquired by California. The following year saw an influx of Mormons who replaced the original Mexican settlers in Martinez. In 1902, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in Martinez but within a few years new businesses emerged that helped support the growth of the town. A water tower was built in 1907 and soon afterwards several stores opened up including Jardín Abreu which became one of America's largest department stores. The 1915 Cholera pandemic hit Martinez hard with over 100 deaths reported between October 1915 and December 1915 alone. However, due to efforts made by local residents and officials as well as donations from citizens across America, little damage occurred to infrastructure or homes during this period of intense disease transmission through food shortages across much of Latin America at that time. Martinez experienced significant growth following World War II with an increase in housing development along with increased industrial production throughout Northern California due to wartime need for materials such as aluminum alloying tools and aircraft parts; these activities created numerous jobs which filled some vacated retail space vacated by businesses closed during WWII era boom times elsewhere within North American cities like Oakland CA etcetera
