Belden founded the Jardine Paper Company here which became one of Fresno's largest landowners and businesses for many years including owning most of what is now downtown Fresno. When he died in 1901, his company had assets that exceeded $1 million dollars ($ million today). As late as 1959 there were still only two stores open - a grocery store and a hardware store - bothowned by independent individuals or families who ran them out of business because they didn't have adequate transportation to get their goods to market or because they couldn't compete with better organized local businesses that had been brought over from other parts of California by railroads during this time period (the modern day Interstate 5 highway system facilitated these changes). A new school opened up just south of town on FM 1411 in 1957 which helped turn around this situation somewhat but it remained difficult for smaller businesses without proper transportation or marketing capabilities to survive outside the larger towns near them (cf., nearby Watsonville). In 1987, when all but one family closed their stores due to competition from larger localities (the last store remaining opened as an anchor tenant across from I-5), Maywood had 3 convenience stores, 2 gas stations/convenience agencies & 1 post office left operating overall! Today it has 4 convenience stores, 2 gas stations/convenience agencies & 1 post office operational combined! These days you can find almost anything you need either locally or quite literally anywhere within 25 miles! In short; things have changed quite a bit since then!
