The town of Mcfarland, California is located in the Kern County area of Southern California. The population was 10,436 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a ranch that was once located there. It is named for John Farrar McFarland who also founded Fresno and other nearby towns. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mcfarland were French Jesuit missionaries in 1769. They named it Point Reyes after one of their number, Jacques-Cartier. In 1818, while surveying Rancho San Andreas de Anza on the east side of Baja California Peninsula, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong McDowell discovered an agricultural land grant called Rancho San Francisco on which he built his headquarters and garrison for his new Mexican Republic campaign against Napoleonic forces occupying Mexico City. A year later he married Maria del Carmen Vallejo whose father had originally been granted this land by Governor Ptolemy Cárdenas in 1827 as part of Fila Blanca grants to various Californios including José Joaquin Moraga and Mariano Castro. A post office was established at San Francisco de Anza in 1828, and grew rapidly due to its location near military posts and trade routes throughout Baja California Province and around the world as travelers took advantage of its easy access to goods shipped down the Paso de Los Angeles River from Vera Cruz orManila through Tubac Pass across Death Valley before reaching Monterey Bay. In 1853 Union Pacific Railroad founder James Kenedy bought Rancho San Francisco from McDowell for $4 million; Kenedy renamed it after himself – American Canyon – because his railroad would cross American Fork Creek adjacent to present day Mcfarland’s narrow gauge tracks within sight but far enough away from populated areas so as not to influence local politics or economy adversely. Today much of what used to be Rancho San Francisco remains undeveloped rural property situated along American Fork Creek within present day Mcfarland limits; however some parcels have been developed into small communities such as Easton Springs (population: 3), West Covina (population: 5), North Covina (population: 6) and Redlands (population: 10).
