In 1876, the first documented shooting in Mendota took place. In that year, an individual named Charles Whitman shot and killed five people on a farmstead in Mendota. The townspeople quickly erected a fence around the site of the shootings, preventing future accidents or other firearm related incidents.

The town began as an agricultural community and has since become known for its winegrowing industry and blue cheese production. There are also several churches in Mendota with services such as Baptist, Catholic and Methodist. Mendota takes its name from General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War and died in 1876 at the age of 37 while commanding an Indian detachment near what is now Rosamond Springs (now Brownsville). A plaque on Highway 21 marks his resting place and this highway was once called "Custer's Trail". Today there are multiple tourist attractions in Mendota including two museums - one focused on farming history and another that specializes in Mexican art - as well as golf courses (the only one within 30 miles), restaurants (including a steakhouse) and a variety of stores which offer unique items unique to Mendota or Kern County specifically.

Mendota is a small town in Humboldt County, California. It is located on the banks of the Klamath River at its confluence with the Trinity River. The name Mendota comes from two Spanish words meaning "plain" and "hollow". The first people to live in Mendota were the Bidwells who arrived in 1847. The Bidwells were followed by the Poston family who lived from 1851-1865. The Postons were followed by the Orcutt family who lived from 1865-1902. In 1902, Mendota was founded as an agricultural community by George W. Orcutt with land he had acquired from his father-in-law, William Cranch. orchardists soon developed fruit trees and vegetables in what is now downtown Mendota. In 1916, Mendota was incorporated as a city under state law and began to build up its infrastructure such as a library, fire department, schools and parks. In 1951, Mendota voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an open air Experimental Station for Climate Research near Bodega Bay which led to establishment of UC Berkeley's nearby Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). This experiment station has played an important role in climate research ever since; it has been home to some of world’s most advanced weather instruments including global radiosondes and weather balloons
