One of the earliest gun sights in Mendota was a simple blacksmith’s sight, dating to 1827. The first settlers in Mendota County were primarily farmers and their herds of livestock, so they relied on animal sighting devices such as dogs or cats. In 1883, A.G. Pratt opened a store at 4th Street and State Route 97 in what is now Mendota. His store became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area forGun aficionados from all over the country. Pratt sold firearms, ammunition and other firearm supplies including mounts for rifles and shotguns. He also offered demonstrations on how to use his sights including mounting them on rifles and shotguns. In 1903, John Waddell established a lumberyard at 5th Street and State Route 97 near where Pratt’s store once stood. Waddell was an early pioneer in Lumberland County and his lumberyard became one of the largest employers in town with employees up to fifty-six men! At Waddell’s urging, local residents started using rifle sights on their firearms to improve accuracy while working outside! In 1905, Waddell donated a set of rifle sights designed by Hiram Maxim to be used by law enforcement officers assigned to patrol Mendota Heights neighborhood near the school district headquarters (now known as Mendota High School). This new sight system quickly caught on among law enforcement officers throughout California! In 1915, after years of research by Dr. George Winfield Weaver Jr., inventor of the Weaver Scope (later developed into today’s Weaver Optics),ABRA introduced its own Gun Sight Model 903 which revolutionized handgun hunting by providing accurate aiming points for pistols across a wide range of distances! With this innovative product line came increased sales forABRA products throughout America! In 1934, ABRA merged with Brownells Inc., creating Brownells-Arsenal Corporation which continued production until it merged with Marlin Firearms Corporation in 1969.* Brownells-Arsenal Corporation manufactured many different typesof firearms sight systems from handguns through machineguns* During World War II*, Marlin Firearms Corporation produced thousands of guns that were used both during combat operations overseasand within our United States military forces* After World War II*, many American manufacturers adopted some formof iron sights technology* As gun manufacturing declined throughout much OFNorth America*, so did rates for quality firearm sights* But never has there been such intense competition between several companies when it comes time to design an innovative new gun sight system* That is what happened with Gun Sights Inc.* When Gun Sights Inc.'s founder Stanislaus Griggs decided he wantedto create an innovative new shotgun scope designhe knew he had hit upon something special! * Stanislaus Griggs began designing his unique shotgun scope designs under the name "Griggs Guns" which eventually became "Weaver Optics"

John Atherton left half of his estate to Alma Lora Berryhill who donated it to Mendota College for use as a research farm for agricultural students. In 1954, Mendota became part of San Joaquin County when it was created from parts of neighboring counties. The county seat changed from Isleton to Mendota several times during its history but has always been located within San Joaquin County limits. Today, Mendota is an agricultural town with a diverse economy that includes dairy farming (the most significant activity), lumber production (a major employer), manufacturing (including leather processing), recreation (especially hiking and nature programming),and retail trade services such as banking, grocery stores, and restaurant chains

The town name was given to it by Captain John Sutter as an honor for his part in helping to create the Central Valley Railroad (later known as the Santa Fe Railroad). In 1957, Mendota became part of what is now Fresno County. At that time, its population numbered only 2,869 residents; today it has grown rapidly to more than 10,000 residents. With its strong Hispanic presence and rich history, Mendota has become an increasingly popular tourist destination among Californians and others visiting the state during summertime.
