Mendota is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Mendota Creek and north of Sanger. Mendota is also home to several schools: Mendota Valley School District #1, Mendota Valley School District #2 and Highland High School. Mendota was founded by Captain George Armstrong in 1853 as a fur trading post on the west bank of the Sacramento River. In 1856, Captain Armstrong's son-in-law John Cranch opened a ranch here and named it after his father-in-law's Rancho Nevada de la Palma (Spanish for "New Mexico"). In 1865, General Crocker granted land to James Folsom near what is now downtown Mendota. In 1870–71, Wm. Hahn sold 4500 acres (18 km²) along the south side of MendOTA Creek to Jens Jensen for $5200 (!). In 1875ader Alvarado donated an parcel of land including present day downtown Mendota to the city of Madera. The first store in what is now downtown Mendota was built by Alder Merrill in 1879; it became known as The Mercantile Exchange & Second Hand Store because its merchandise consisted mostly of secondhand goods from around Northern California and Oregon. The store burned down in 1902 but was rebuilt with a new roof and storefront just across Main Street from where it once stood. Heldraht & Sons Construction Co., later part of Pacific Gas & Electric Company acquired Heldraht Bros., dynamite dealers from Illinois who built many early electric power plants in Southern California including one at Bakersfield that supplied power to Los Angeles during World War I Captain George Armstrong Cemetery contains remains of many pioneers who helped found or move into this community such as Captain George Armstrong himself and his son George Armstrong Jr.. There are also remains of numerous animals including horses, dogs, cats and even emus!
