Menifee, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 4,848 at the 2010 census. Menifee is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name Menifee comes from the Tehachapi word "meni-fe" meaning "a place where there are many trees." The first known settlers were a party of nine men and their dog named Fish who established a cabin on July 12th, 1847. They named their settlement Menifee after Governor Manuel Feliciano's daughter Mena Heald's home in Monterey County. The first post office opened in 1849 and was called Indian Wells. In 1872, when J. P. Morgan founded the First National Bank of San Francisco, he donated land for a branch office in Menifee and renamed it Morgan Avenue after him. A train depot was built on the site in 1916 and served as the town's main commercial center until it closed its doors in 1977 due to budget cuts by then-Mayor George Norris. In 1984, City Manager Don Rankin persuaded then-Governor Pete Wilson to create a new government district within Kern County that would include Menifee and nearby Hanford Valley communities such as Oakhurst and Marysville; this gave Menifee jurisdiction over all municipal functions other than fire prevention and ambulance services within its own boundaries which still remain today despite being incorporated into Fresno proper during that time frame In 1990, Mayor Jerry Sanders appointed Don Kappas as head of Public Works with responsibility for all city services including water systems, street cleaning/maintenance, parks maintenance etc.; Kappas had been previously responsible for technology issues within City Hall When George Norris resigned his position as Mayor effective January 1st 1999 to become an Director with Wells Fargo bank (the largest financial institution located outside California), Mayor Tom Bates appointed downtown resident Bob Hagen to fill his shoes; however Hagen resigned less than two months later due to health reasons After eight years of mayorless governance during which time much progress was made but never fully realized while Community Development Authority (CDA) status quo prevailed local officials decided to re‐apply for CDA status this past December 25th 2009 having failed three times since 2007 .On January 3rd 2010 Govinda signed SB 527 into law making Menifee an official city

By 1912 Menifee had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with production of shoes, agricultural products, cigarettes and other items for local markets. However, during World War I (1914-18) industry went into decline due to wartime restrictions on trade; however, men continued to work in industry through the war years until its end in 1918 After World War I ended there were several waves of poverty which led to social unrest culminating in a riot at Menifee High School on November 5th 1921 which left one dead and over fifty injured including twenty students . After this event many businesses closed down due to lack of customers or regulation from city fathers who felt that high taxes were necessary to support public schools while maintaining order

Menifee was founded in 1868 by G.W. Menifee and his wife, Lillie A. Menifee. The town was named for the Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico, which served as its first church. In 1876, Menifee became an incorporated city. The population of Menifee increased from 30 to 100 during the late 19th century; however, it decreased during the 20th century due to a number of factors including the decline in oil production in California and the Migration of many people to other states during that time period.
