The origins of Montclair date back to 1849 when American prospectors discovered gold in what is now Montclair Township. In 1865, two brothers – Charles Fenton and George Washington Fenton – bought land from Alameda Creek Indians for $10 per acre. They founded a new town named after their parents: Charles Fenton Park (later renamed Montclair). The original community was built on a hill overlooking present-day Montclair Township. The home of first settler John Ahearn has been preserved as a museum within walking distance of both townships since it was built in 1872. By 1870, over 100 homes had been erected in what became known as "Township #1", while another detachment - "Township #2" - developed along Ontario Avenue near present day Rosemead Elementary School. In 1876, sections of what are now Westminster and South Pasadena were annexed into Montclair; this annexation led to increased growth because many residents chose not to move from their homes within Westminster or South Pasadena due to fears that they would be lost in an expanding annexation effort by Riverside County.
