In 1853, two men named George W. Griggs and W. H. Coulter bought a land grant of 7000 acres in Monterey County, California. Monterey is a city in California, United States, located on the Monterey Peninsula. The population was 931 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from Spanish meaning "Island of Two Harbors," and was given to the city by Governor John Goodwin in 1846 due to its location at two harbors on the Pacific Coast. In 1850, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill near by and quickly became a major industry in town; many buildings were constructed for mining purposes including mineshafts and assay stations throughout downtown and along Commercial Street. By 1860 most of what is now downtown had been built up with one block remaining being primarily commercial with residences above on Market Street between First and Second Streets NW., one block north of Market on Adams Street between Third and Fourth Streets NE., two blocks east of Third Street south of Market Place NW., four blocks northwest corner First Street & Northwest corner Second Street SE., two blocks southeast corner First Street & northeast corner Second Streets SW., one block northeast corner First Streets & southwest corner Second Streets W.. Mining operations ceased in 1969 but left behind extensive ruins including shafts deep within the earth which continue today to produce small amounts of silver ore

In 1821, the Mexican government granted a charter to Rancho Monterey. The name `Monterey' was given because of the Mount Monterey Observatory, which was located on the property. In 1847, Captain José María Narváez founded a small settlement at Monterey and called it Paso del Norte. The first white person to arrive in California was James Watt in 1769.
