Since 2000, there has been large redevelopment taking place on both sides of I-10 consisting primarily (but not exclusively) of mixed use development with retail spaces nearby on Second Street between Schmitt Boulevard (west side) and Interstate 10 Eastbound (east side). This mixed use development has brought much needed jobs back to downtown while also preserving some important historical resources along Second Street corridor such as pre-war brick homes dating back to 1887
