Morgan Hill, California is a small city located in the East Bay of San Francisco, California. It was founded by Mariano Vallejo and named for him. The first post office in Morgan Hill was established in 1871. The population of Morgan Hill peaked at 28,000 in 1924 and declined to 17,000 by 1970. However, the population has since increased to over 50,000 residents. The history of Morgan Hill goes back to 1851 when Mexican American rancher Don Carlos Martinez set out from Bakersfield with his family to found a rancho (land grant) on the east side of San Francisco Bay. After surveying and exploring the area, Martinez selected an area between what are now Telegraph Road and Mission Street as his Rancho Vallejo site. He named it after himself - which is why it is spelled "Morgan" hill today rather than "Mariano" valley or "Valley". In 1861, while still living at Rancho Vallejo, Mariano Vallejo married Maria Elena Sanchez who was born in Alameda County, California on January 12th, 1829. They came to Morgan Hill with their two children - Francisco (1862-1910) and Emmeline (1865-1946). After several years of farming and raising livestock near their original home near Mission Creek Boulevard & Pescadero Road on Hwy 101 near present day Union City (likely close to where Interstate 5 intersects), they decided to move their operations an additional mile northward along Mission Creek Boulevard just inside the Contra Costa County line on land granted them by Judge James McMillan about two miles northeast of present day Menlo Park off State Route 24A just before power lineman's Campion Avenue crossed State Route 24B at what is now Race Course Road/Old Utopia Rd., then part of Bear Valley Open Space Preserve within today's Menlo Park Community College District boundaries; thence down Race Course Rd./Old Utopia Rd., past Home Depot Square into town limits...the final location being a point southeast of Coyote Flat Reservoir off Orchard Ave., current site of City Hall...present day University Avenue & Old Town Hall Dr.) In 1870 they had another child - Leona Márquez de la Torre y Vargas. From these four children only three lived long enoughto reach adulthood: Srno.-Mariano (btw 1860-1872?), Jrno.-Emmeline(1875-1946?)& LaRosa Márquez-Vargas(1879-1945?). Of these three only Srno.-MarianoVallejo survived into manhood proper: he died at 82 years old on October 8th 1946! He first settled down around hereabouts in 1853 but eventually moved upriver across Coyote Flat Reservoir towards Sacramento Peak country some time later settling finally at what is now known as Middle Valley about five miles northwest of town center on lands purchased from Ygnacio Moreno sometime prior thereto circa 1865 or so following US Grant’s late April 1865 sale thereof including all that lies eastward thereof extending northeasterly unto Russian River etc.. From there he began engaging principally in fishing trips upriver for Chinook salmon during early days also taking white fir logs for firewood etc.; trading goods with Russians going upriver ebb & flow as occasion demanded mostly through Egan Butte Trading Post thro’out parts especially during Drysummer months when river levels were high held good generally until recent times although not always reliable due various factors notably loss or destruction o f trees etc.. Morgan Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 26,011 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and the home to East Bay Regional Park. A portion of Morgan Hill was annexed by Oakland in 1892. The first European settler in what became Morgan Hill was José Ines Aguirre who arrived on March 25, 1795 from Spain with his family and three horses. They named their land "Los Ferreros" after two of their brothers-in-law: Antonio Ferrer and José de la Cueva y Vargas. The first post office in town was established on June 10, 1800 by James Irvine. The area now comprising Morgan Hill was part of San Francisco Bay Area until it was annexed by Oakland in 1892 as part of a larger effort to make up for lost land caused by the gold rush. However, many people continued to live in and around what is now known as Morgan Hill because they believed that it would become an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to water resources. In 1873, local entrepreneur John Sutter founded the City National Bank which quickly became one of downtown Oakland's most important businesses. By 1907, Sutter had built over 30 homes in what is today known as downtown Morgan Hill; he also founded Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) here soon after its incorporation into the public utilities company Northern Pacific (NPC), later California State Highway system (CHS). NPC planned early on to build a large shopping district called Mackaytown along Telegraph Avenue near Lake Merritt which never materialized but has been mentioned as an eventual development site for downtown Morgan Hill ever since becauseoakland felt that it could not compete with PGC's size or financial stability when Chico took over PC management from NPC during World War II.
