In 1879, a group of businessmen in Mountain View, California founded The Binocular Company. At the time, binoculars were seen as a necessity for farmers and other outdoor enthusiasts to see around obstacles and remote areas. The company started selling binoculars through mail order and at local fairs. By 1925, the company had become one of the leading producers of binoculars in the United States. During World War II, The Binocular Company produced military-grade binoculars that were used by Allied forces in Europe and Asia. In 1951, The Binocular Company merged with Brown & Williamson Inc., creating what is now known as Brown & Williamson Optics LLC. That same year, Brown & Williamson opened its first store in Silicon Valley. In 1984, Brown & Williamson merged with Time-Life Inc., creating what is now known as Time-Life Optics LLC. In 1998, Time-Life acquired Vandemare Corporation (a manufacturer of advanced optics products), which created what is now known as Vandemare/Time-Life Opticals LLC. In 2006, Time- Life spun off its optical product divisions into their own companies: Spectral Devices Corporation (Spectral) and Roper Technologies Corporation (Roper). Today, all three companies produce high quality eyeglasses for people around the world.

This land became known as Russian Flatlands because it was not used for agriculture but served as a rough market for goods shipped by ship to Southern California. Russia Flatlands was later developed into East Palo Alto with its first buildings being erected in 1850s by an group of entrepreneurs led by entrepreneur George Lawton. These pioneers were among the early settlers who called themselves "the Forty Acres". The name "Mountain View" was given to what today is the southern end of Russian Flatlands which extend eastward from Menlo Park along Hwy 101 Boulevard to Guildford Road beyond Interstate 280/I-280 School District boundaries

The first humans to set foot in what is now Mountain View were Native American traders and pilgrims from northeast Mexico who passed through the area on their way to Santa Clara Valley in 1851. In 1892, John Della Lana founded the Northern Pacific Railway here after traveling through what is now Mountain View on his trip from Sacramento to Seattle. By 1910, Mountain View had 1,500 residents and it was incorporated as a city on December 3, 1911. At that time it became home to Milpitas High School which helped spur development here including Almaden Park (now LinkedIn headquarters), Google LLCs Eric Schmidt (founder) dormitory and current Googleplex buildings among others. Mountain View experienced rapid growth due in part to World War II supplying military servicemen with new technologies needed for war effort such as radar and aircraft design. After World War II ended some businesses stopped manufacturing or moving production away from California because of low labor costs there – instead they relocated back into California where they could continue operations outside of union jurisdiction despite government efforts to keep them out by taxing relocation expenses high enough that few companies could afford it). On October 28, 1988 Google announced its intent to build a $1 billion data center near South Elwood Avenue atGoogleplex Drive within minutes of each other across town creating shockwaves throughout Silicon Valley; this sparked off intense competition between several large tech companies vying for access to scarce land west of Palo Alto while also threatening other local businesses with closure if they did not come online with similar plans or investments - this period leading up to today’s silicon valley ecosystem where startups are often born out of lack of space or opportunity
