The history of National City can be traced back to 1865 when two Americans, John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Hearst, purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of Bakersfield from the Chumash tribe for $5 per head. In 1868, Sutter built the first permanent structure in what would later become National City: a log cabin named Fort Sutter. Over time, different families started to inhabit the area and business enterprises began to grow. One of these businesses was Wernham’s Hose Co., which operated a water system for San Francisco until 1922. In 1870, another American entrepreneur named James Wernham arrived in California and began to develop the town around his hosiery factory called Wernham’s Mill. He built several small houses near where he now stands on Pennsylvania Avenue NE in downtown National City. By 1872, Wernham had attracted other entrepreneurs with him and by 1875 there were five stores operating out of Wernham’s Mill; three grocery stores (Sumner & Sons), one millinery store (Belle Foods), and one blacksmith shop (Fenton Bros.). That same year also saw the founding of the California State Agricultural Society at what is now Capitol Hill NE in downtown National City by Rear Admiral George Prentice Colby with assistance from General Edwin Momyer Dodge Sr.. On July 4th, 1875 – just six months after NCSH was founded – General Albert Sidney Johnston led Ulysses S Grant’s army overland from Sacramento into Imperial County during the Mexican War and invaded Bakersfield looking for gold deposits that he believed could be found within this conflict-ridden region! After reaching NCSH on December 10th following an arduous journey through harsh terrain filled with hostile Native American tribesmen known as “The Forty Thieves” along routes that still remain today as part of Highway 84 Northbound between Sierra Madre Mountains Wilderness Area west of Big Bear Lake Regional Park northwest of Amador Valley Regional Park eastof Ione Lake Regional Park – General Johnston ordered all citizens inside their homes until further notice due to an impending military action against neighboring Rancho Cucamonga! Although many residents chose not to take up arms against their Spanish occupiers (the defending forces were only made up mostly white Californians), over 200 men volunteered for duty at Fort Point Neiatza northeast of town under various command including Major Charles Folsom who eventually became Commandant at Fort Point Neiatza! Around this time too there started to be some concern about whether or not NCSH would be able to support itself should larger towns such as Bakersfield or Tulare become established nearby given that both these municipalities had already experienced heavy population growth thanks mainly to large influxes Of Chinese immigrants who worked on local farms during those days! However despite these concerns efforts quickly commenced by local businessmen like JB Beardsley Jr./JB Beardsley & Son Auctioneers Incorporated who organized a wagon load full of goods necessary for daily operations such as flour, bacon grease etc., which arrived every day throughout December 25th - January 1st 1865 at what is now Calvary Chapel Church SE – just southwest corner Main Street/Old US 75 exit #2 across street from current day Geary Elementary School) without any interference from larger government agencies! This marks one significant event leading up towards future development in NCSH; prior thereto it was considered simply an agricultural stop on your commute between Bakersfield or Tulare! As mentioned earlier businesses flourished thanks largely to increasing trade connections with Northern California via Stagecoach lines running north out
