In 1915, citizens adopted a resolution stating that they desire "a quiet town where there may be no screaming children or constant traffic." This policy led to what would become known as "The Newman Principle". Today's shopping center occupies much of the original plaza which still includes several businesses from when it operated as an open-air market with produce from local farms along one side and clothier items along another side until 1964 when it closed due to fire damage done by thieves while being used as an auto parts dealership. A new shopping mall known locally as The Village has replaced most of the old market space since its opening in 1984 although some older shops have reopened such asMrs Toms which closed after 33 years in 2009 but reopened under new ownership prior to reopening under its old name again earlier this year; also reopened were several antique stores from former Plaza space before it closed during renovation work following Suze Orman's purchase of property nearby in 2007). A large park called Newton Hills covers most of northwestern corner of city limits just east of Interstate 280 with tennis courts (including one built specifically for NewmanSports), playgrounds (including one designed especially for kids), baseball diamonds/fields (including one providing artificial turf), football fields (including a large stadium approximately half filled with sand so that events like Super Bowl XLI can take place without noise pollution), water features including ponds and reservoirs fed by both public and private sources, enjoyng areas such as a lighted golf course located across street from high school complex; multiple restaurants including SB&B Italian restaurant which opened shortly after I-280 interchange opened; movie theaters including Regal Cinemas which moved into formerly I-280 interchange lot next door prior to closure due to poor management; numerous garage sales each week throughout summer months concurrent with local farmers markets held every other Saturday night

Today there are few reminders of what once thrived here – only a few old buildings from when Newman was an agricultural center remain standing (most notably a schoolhouse and church). But despite this lack of visible evidence of Newmans' past, Vestal Catholic Church & Museum remains one of Vestal's most popular tourist attractions because it preserves significant evidence from that era including artifacts related to local farming practices and clothing industry among others.
Newman was founded in 1848 as a small community on the San Joaquin River between Stockton and Sacramento. The town grew rapidly, becoming one of the most important centers of early California agriculture. In 1868, the town was renamed Newman after Bishop John Newman of Los Angeles, who had come to preach at nearby Mount Carmel Church. In 1908, the city of Sacramento annexed part of Newman to create what is now downtown Sacramento. At that time, much of downtown was still agricultural land and consisted mostly of adobe buildings. The city built a large concrete building which serves as its main government center today. In 1959, Mayor Elmer Robinson announced plans for the demolition of many old downtown buildings in order to make way for a new high school and other development projects. A few people protested against this plan until they were joined by others who formed what became known as the "Save Downtown Newman" movement. This group campaigned successfully against the destruction of many old buildings before finally succeeding in getting Mayor Robinson to back down from his plans.
