By 1912 there were over 100 residents living in downtown Newport News with three hotels (the First National Bank Building being the first), two churches (Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and Baptist Holiness Chapel) and six stores including one owned by Mrs John Atherton which served as both a post office and grocery store for many years before it burned down in 1955. In 1914-1915 an organization called "The American Legion" bought land northeast of town for use as a training encampment for World War I soldiers from Southern California who would fight in Europe but few know about this history because it has been covered up since then; This camp also housed many Native Americans who were taken into custody during war time although they later regained their rights through court cases brought on their behalf by local officials like Newmans grandson Jerry Atherton . Today it is known for its independent spirit, relaxed lifestyle, and strong community feel. In 1903, when Adolphus H. Newman died at age 93 after a long career in business administration and politics with stints as mayor (1892-1894), his widow Sarah A. Newman became headmistress of nearby Lathrop High School where she continued to teach until her death in 1964 at age 96*. After her death two years later, Mrs. Newman's son Adolphus H., Jr., succeeded her as headmaster and taught until he retired in 1984.* Mrs. Newman's legacy lives on through Lathrop High School where Msgr.'s daughter Julie Muehlenger leads classes currently through 2020* (*Julie Muehlenger is also an alumna). Newman's architecture reached new heights during Mrs.(Adolfus)H.(Jr.)'s tenure with additions such as a gymnasium (1907), science annex (1910), library (1913), art wing (1920), tennis court (1923), musical instruments room/ceiling band room/harpsichord room (1927-1945)*(*Not all wings were added during their lifetime - see attached file for more information). After World War II things changed drastically here with rapid growth in industry followed by rapidly decreasing prices for food items***(*See attached file for examples)). Many people attribute this change to two main factors: postwar rationing caused by war efforts and government subsidies given out specifically to farmers*** (*See attachment File 2 - History Of Agriculture In And Around Newman CA'). While many residents are proud of what they've accomplished since then*, there has been less discussion about how those accomplishments might have been possible without decades worth of community investment*****. Today few places offer quite the qualityof life available in neighboring Bakersfield or Kern county***(). By 1860, the population of Newman had increased to about 100 people. A post office was established in 1865, and by 1868 it had developed into a small town with a school and two churches. In 1886, local ranchers began to invest in farming resources in the area that would later become Newman County. They set up sawmills, ranches, and mines that produced gold and silver until World War II when the industry collapsed due to over-production. The town slowly recovered during this time but experienced significant decline in population after World War II as most residents left for better opportunities elsewhere.
