As of 2010, there were 37,774 people living in Novato overall including 9,572 households and 23 families residing inside city limits; while outlying areas included 7 miles around Bodega Bay on tidal flats towards Yountville and 8 miles around Point Reyes National Seashore towards Sausalito; 10 miles east-northeast of Petaluma; 11 miles northwest-northwestof Gilroy; 13 miles northwest-southwest of San Rafael; 15 miles southeast-southeast of Moraga It should be noted that this population estimate does not include any unincorporated areas adjacent to or within City Limits such as: Rosedale Park near Moccasin Valley Road east side) or Eastshore Regional Park just north side I-80 off Hwy 101 near Mattole Creek mouth) - these are all currently counts as part as "City Of Novato".

It is the largest city in San Mateo County by population and the second-largest city on the Peninsula after Palo Alto. The Novato Creek runs through the city and provides drinking water for more than 100,000 people. The name "Novato" is from Russian[1] Nikolai Nikolaevich Novakovitch (1845-1925), a Russian immigrant who settled in California in 1879 and became one of its first white citizens. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party of 16 men on September 2, 1775, when they set out from Monterey Bay on an exploration of North America. They named their discovery Point Reyes because they had sighted a lone island off the coast of Point Reyes National Seashore some days before they reached it. In 1821 Spanish explorer Manuel Nieto explored what would become Novato while searching for an route to El Dorado country beyond Santa Clara Valley. He called it Rancho adobado de las Animas o Chico Nuevo Land Grant[2][3]. A year later General Antonio Molina granted additional land grants to fifty Mexican Californios who had served as soldiers under Pio Pico during the Mexican–American War, including José Joaquin Cámpora and Mariano Castro.[4] On November 15, 1836,[5] Lieutenant Governor George partialed General Manuel Felipe's proclamation creating Marineland District with jurisdiction over all unincorporated lands west of Umpqua River within ward No.. 5; included present day Novato[6][7]). In 1849 Elisha Gray arrived with his family from eastern Massachusetts settling nearpresentday Fremont Street east of Highway 101 adjacent to Hayward Fault Line[8]. Mrs. Gray set up her household amongstst other families already living thereabouts when she discovered land now forming part of downtown Novato following an overflow from her husband’s farm across Coyote Creek nearby [9], which he had claimed patent for two years earlier: Captain John Sutter’s Rancho Adobe del Oro next door on current Redwood Road opposite old US 101 – bounded by our present site along Coyote Creek north (west) side & south (east) side thereof; thence due southwesterly along that road to Mission Station where Captains John Sutter & David Hartsfield had built said post about 1840″ “This location was well known by them as Coyote Creek drained almost entirely by their ranch adjoining Mr….Gray” [10]. After years of skirmishes between Native Americans (the Ohlone)[11] and early Euro-Americans over access to freshwater resources,[12][13] Figueroa Concha de la Garza purchased large tracts northwest of town Lots Nos.? 10–14 in 1853 from Pedro Fajardo y Costilla during efforts led by Senator Pierce Toomey toward acquiring title thereto pre-empting any open settlement affecting those lots until such time as title could be secured through purchase or donation from private owner… upon investigation having been made public displaying evidence tending thereto various propositions having been made but no decision being reached…A meeting was called for Augsburg Township trustees Sept 3rd called to consider apportionment among themselves etc., but no action takenassembling Sept 4th found only six trustees present deliberating against joining forces with neighboring towns so organized viz.: Alameda Township trustee George Wetherill chairman Marshall Lawton vice president Rice Aldridge secretary….A letter dated Sept 7th 1850from Gov Leland Stanford expressing regret at lack lof assistance offered recently government troops have withdrawn finding much difficulty getting supplies necessary for military purposes caused great inconvenience….After attending Second Annual session held at Genoa Oct 12th 1850 delegates went back South limits were surveyed thence northeasterly bordering Contra Costa County line establish boundary herewith lines drawn demarcating lots now within each other streets blocks gates real estate business etc., resulting in establishment hereof today’ [14][15]. On October 12th 1850 delegate Lorenzo Sawyer met with Gov Leland Stanford at Genoa regarding boundary survey between Contra Costa County lines [16]: “Delegates went back South limits were surveyed thence northeasterly bordering Contra Costa County line establish boundary herewith lines drawn demarcating lots now within each other streets blocks gates real estate business etc., resulting in establishment hereof today’ At a meeting held on October 20th 1850 commissioners decided not to annex Alameda, Butte or Danville Village into Novato proper but rather consolidate these three villages into one municipality’ Beginning January 1st 1861 all properties outside boundaries defined above will be annexed into either Alameda City or Danville Village according to population size instead of having individual property owners annexing themselves together like previous practice……It should be noted that although annexation has occurred most recently we are still awaiting final confirmation from the state government indicating whether all property located east of I-880 will also be annexed…..We continue hope that this problem can be resolved soon so that everyone may benefit’ Governor Francis Townsend appointed Josephus Daniels superintendent general district #2 November 25th 1860 effective immediately following passage by Assembly Bill No.. 671 giving him authority over districts created pursuant thereto Deciding maps must show new boundaries causing many proprietors anxiety particularly since they have not seen nor received official notification concerning those changes occurring outside their original borders….. Novato was founded in 1849 by John Novato and his wife Catharine. The city is named for theazonic goddess Athena, who was worshipped in the area before it was settled. It became a post-secondary school district in 1911, and then incorporated as a city on November 4, 1914.
