In 1850, Santa Ana gave control of Rancho La Laguna to John Cámpora who made it into one of Southern California's most successful agriculture enterprises On December 1st 1860 Major Elisha Richardson established Ventura County as one unit out of Ventura County District #2 under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Harkness US Volunteers Militia In 1912 Oxnard became incorporated as a city with a population estimate of 508 people During World War II Oxnard was home to many Naval dockyards where many warships were built including USS Enterprise (CVN-68), USS Hornet (CVN-92), USS Lexington (CVBN-75), USS Yorktown(CVNS 75) and USS Shangri-La(CVE 85).
