Oxnard is a city in Ventura County, California. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1777 and has been the seat of government since 1881. The population was 107,521 at the 2010 census. Oxnard is located on the eastern coast of Ventura County and includes most of the central Business District neighborhoods including Downtown, Midtown, South Central, and North Central Oxnard. The first European settlers in what would become Oxnard were conquistadors who arrived in 1777 from Mexico City. They named their new settlement Santa Clara de la Roca after St. Clare of Assisi, but soon discovered that they had landed on an uninhabited island which they quickly renamed Santa Margarita de las Flores (St. Margaret's Island). In 1779 Captain George Vancouver explored the area and reported back to Spain that he had found "a very good harbor" for ships with room to berth for 100 vessels- this type of report helped encourage more Spaniards to settle in Ventura County.
