The first firearms in California were pistols and revolvers made by Jesse James and his brother-in-law, William Fenton. The rifles were made by Orris & Dixon, a gunsmithing firm in Sacramento. In 1868, the first shotguns were manufactured in Pacific Grove. They used rimfire cartridges. In 1870–71, shotguns became available withottoman actions which allowed them to be fired automatically from the shoulder like rifles. In 1875, automatic weapons began to be produced in California using breechloading guns fed by means of a drum magazine and belt feed known as the “double action” or “automatic” revolver. By 1880 these weapons had become so familiar that they came to be called " Automatic Pistol caliber ". Automatic pistols continued to beproduced until 1907 when they were replaced by machineguns
Pacific Grove, California is an unincorporated community in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of San Jose and is itself within Silicon Valley. Its name comes from nearby Monterey Bay near which it sits. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pacific Grove were Spanish missionaries in 1776-77, followed by Englishmen in 1821 and then American settlers in 1847. The area that would become Pacific Grove was part of Rancho de las Pulgas, one of many Ranchos Mexicanos granted to fur traders and ranch hands in 1851 during the Mexican–American War. The town site was surveyed by Lieutenant Colonel George C. Beale on February 14, 1857 (replacing a previous proposal by John Sutter), and named for General James Kappes who had led Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War as Commandant of Camp Buchanan near Sacramento. In 1870, a post office called "Pulgas" was established at the junction of State Route 1010 (now Interstate 880) and US 95; it served until 1895 when the town became an incorporated place under its present name. Pacific Grove experienced several significant changes during its early years: one change came with incorporation as a town on November 3, 1886; another came when a new water supply system was installed; still others occurred with various annexations or rezoning later that year following contests among local businesses over boundaries adjustments necessary because of development plans being put into effect by Southern Pacific Railroad Company representatives in response to railroad investments opening up throughout Northern California just south of where Pacific Grove sat

In 1945, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima destroyed most of Japan and killed approximately 70,000 people. The city’s population decreased following the attack, and it did not regain its previous size until 1980. As a result of the bombings, many Pacific Grove residents lost their homes and businesses.
