In 1863, two American soldiers named Hinkle and Fry discovered a large freshwater lake near present day San Bernardino County while on amilitary scouting mission into northern California. They named their discovery Lake Paraíba after General José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla who had conquered Mexico City three years earlier. The first European settlement at Paradise was made by Captain John Cranch in 1847 on Rancho Buena Vista nearpresent day Carson City. After some initial struggles with Indian hostilities, Cranch developed a prosperous cattle grazing business that generated wealth for both him and his backers including George Morrison who donated most of the town site east of Pismo Beach which became downtown LOS ANGELES (now part of Glendale). From this nucleus grew one or more smaller settlements each year until within five years all but four had disappeared due either to conflicts with local Indians or Mexican encroachment upon rancho properties following new gold discoveries along the coast southward from San Francisco Bay (Alaska has never been claimed by any country). The last remaining pioneer family at Buena Vista moved out in 1872 when word spread about Mexican efforts to establish a huge mining colony on El Dorado Canyon northeast oflos Angeles under President Fillmore’s orders following discovery at Sutter’s Mill plus other significant finds at Mono Pass just north of Reno Nevada Territory - making it easier for Mexicans already settled there to move westward into what was then British Columbia via overland routes through Oregon Trail territory inaccessible only by sea route without violating Treaty rights secured by Britain centuries earlier against Spanish colonial ambitions throughout much Central America/South America including current day Honduras etc., etc., etc., leading directly toFilipino refugees emerging many times larger than Ulysses S Grant estimated from various points around West Coast during World War II displacement totaling at least 150,000plus individuals primarily Catholics Japanese American WW2 Pacific Islanders) .Aftermath: thousands died returning home sick & exhausted from arduous journey across difficult terrain Endless lines formed outside U.S GIs' military hospitals trying unsuccessfullyto get food & water for families left behind; vast amounts confiscated government property used primarilyfor housing & other infrastructure purposes also resulted major social problems resultingin continued population growth up until recent decades especially among lower income groups

Spanish people continued living there until 1849 when Californio Jose Garza arrived with his family and began ranching there also. Garza set up a small town near present-day Fresno which he named after his home state of Mexico City (Puebla). Eventually other Mexicans came to live here as well and the name changed back to Rancho San Francisco de Asís y Costilla again in 1861 when all these residents moved over from Mexico City. The Gold Rush started around1848 and soon people were coming into California looking for gold found by prospectors along the riverbanks or at places like Sutter's Mill (now part of Sacramento). By 1863, most of this new country was covered with dense forests so finding any gold proved difficult even if you did find some nuggets! However, many people kept coming anyway because there seemed to be something special about this place – especially since it was free from military occupation like nearby Fort Yuma which acted as a control center for cattle traders trying to get rich off America's growing gold fields! In 1865, John Cady founded what would eventually become Silicon Valley on endowment money given him by wealthy investors including Andrew Carnegie and Cyrus McCormick Jr.. This was only one example of how entrepreneurs took advantage of natural resources available in Southern California during the 1860s such as water bottling plants (182 survive today), logging operations (including Leland Stanford Jr.'s famous timber empire), mining interests (the Central Pacific Railroad bought rights to mined coal near Ukiah in 1916) etc.–just a few examples that show how technology led to increased economic growth during this time period! The area now known as Paradise, California was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. The area was part of the main mission district of San Francisco until 1836, when it became part of Mexico. The United States acquired the territory from Mexico in 1848, and declared it a part of the newly formed California Territory. In 1850, the region became a part of the United States after California won its independence from Mexico. The town of Oceanside was founded on what is now State Route 1 in 1857, and quickly became one of Northern California's most important towns. In 1906, an earthquake struck Northern California and destroyed much of Oceanside; however, the town still managed to function effectively for many years through donations from residents and businesses. In 1938, Paradise began to gain notoriety due to allegations that Mayor Manuel Gomez had links with organized crime. After several investigations were conducted into Gomez' past behavior and business dealings, he was eventually impeached and removed from office.
