In 1951, development began that would change the face of Parlier forever; it became home to one of Kern County's first large shopping malls called "Everetts Landing". With its two levels of parking, an six-screen movie theater, several restaurants including La Raza Mexican restaurant and PenFed gasoline station, Everetts Landing quickly became one of the most popular destinations for locals and visitors alike during those early years. A major fire destroyed much of downtown Everetts Landing on November 9th 1947 while holiday shoppers were inside the mall; but rebuilding soon commenced with new stores opening across from original building (now used as a annex to adjacent GEO Group company). Founded in 1853 by German immigrants, Parlier was first known as 'Parreledorf'. The name change came about because one of the original settlers, Johann Friedrich Parreledecker, had to leave Germany after the Napoleonic Wars. In 1868, Parlier became part of what was then called Butte County and remained so until it merge with Shasta County in 2000. The town is named for William H.Parlier, an early settler who platted and sold land here in 1853. For many years Parlier residents were self-sufficient farmers and merchants; however, over time industry from nearby Fresno began to take hold as well. Today there are several businesses that operate within the town limits: a grocery store and post office (since 1907), a restaurant (since 1911), a mechanic shop (since 1915), two banks (Fresno National Bank & Trust Company & First State Bank) and two churches - both Episcopal chapels dating back to 1900.
