The Parlier family homesteaded on a tract of land that is now part of the city of Sacramento. In 1875, the railroad reached Parlier and began to transport goods and passengers between Sacramento and Redding. This allowed residents to begin importing goods from outside of California and creating a new economy based on local industry. In 1912, the city council decided to change its name to Sacramento because it had become the seat of government for much of Northern California. The first mayor of Sacramento was John Sutter with Charles Fenton as his vice mayor. By 1916, Sacramento had outgrown its population so much that it became necessary to build a second city hall, which is now known as City Hall Plaza. The cost for this project was $2 million which was funded by assessments on property within the boundaries of Sacramento at that time
Parlier is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census.
