In 1907, John Sutter founded the Pico Rivera cotton plantation near present-day Sylmar. The plantation prospered until 1913 when it was sold to Edwin O'Neill for $250,000. O'Neill renamed the plantation Pueblo Viejo after his home town of Puerto Rico where he had been born in 1851. From 1914 to 1916 O'Neill served as Mayor of Los Angeles and then as Governor of California before selling the farm to George Wickersham in 1924 for $1 million dollars ($10 million current value). The Wickershams deed also included part of what is now known as Slauson Avenue in Pomona; this parcel has been used by various families since its purchase including that of former NBA player Julius Erving who owned it from Wickersham in 1948 until his death in 2001. In 1938 Midget Motors produced a small sports car model called the Pinto based on designs by Joséfito Alonso and Harry Weischedel under license from Buick Motor Company and using bodywork designed by Midget's own Bob Riley; this car became well known throughout North America through advertising campaigns featuring celebrities such as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe
