Piedmont, California was founded on October 26, 1847 by two men, Jedediah Smith and George C. Klamath. The region around Piedmont was first inhabited by the Mono people who lived in small villages along the San Andreas Fault. In 1862, General Phillip Sheridan traveled through this area and noted the high quality of life in the area. He recommended that these resources be exploited for military purposes so more soldiers could be stationed in California to protect the state. The town of Piedmont was built on a hill overlooking Rancho Adobe (now part of Beverly Hills), which became one of Hollywood's most popular addresses due to its commanding view of Los Angeles County and its easy access to goods and services. By 1924, Piedmont had a population of over 60,000 people living in 527 homes. Some of Hollywood's biggest names were born or raised in Piedmont including Shirley Temple (1908-1983), Norma Shearer (1915-1996), Elvis Presley (1935-1977), James Dean (1946-1978) and Robert Wagner (1896-1980). In 1951, residents voted to merge with neighboring Los Angeles County to form one big county. This led to some changes for Piedmont as well such as lost businesses and increased taxes but overall it felt like a positive change. In 1984, voters approved Measure M which created an open space preserve within Piedontown boundaries known as "The Park". This allowed for much more public use within the community while still preserving its unique character. Today, there are over 1 million people living in Piedontown making it one of Southern California's largest communities.
The Piedmont region of California, including the cities of Monterey, Salinas, and Yreka, was first settled by Native Americans. The area now includes areas that were part of the Mexican state of Monterey and parts of Alta California. The area was explored by Spain in 1769 and it was claimed by Mexico in 1821. In 1848 the United States acquired much of what is now California when it purchased lands east of the Sierra Nevada from Mexico.
