Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It is located on the edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is east of Sacramento. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. The first firearms were made in 1853 by John Sutter in his ranch near what is now Pleasant Hill. He started making pistols and shotguns to sell to settlers on his property. In 1857, he opened a store in Pleasant Hill and began sales of ammunition and rifles to local farmers. soon after he became known as "the man with the guns." He continued to make firearms until 1900 when he sold his business to Prentice Miller. From then on rifle manufacturing was carried out by Emmet & Sons Rifle Company until 1935 when it merged into Winchester Repeating Arms Corp.. In 1898-99, Pleasant Hillsmen met at a local restaurant called The Vine to discuss gun control measures that had been proposed by the state legislature that year. From its beginnings as an agricultural community, Pleasant Hill has become an important center for law enforcement in Kern County since its incorporation as a town in 1904. In 1909, deputies from nearby Bakersfield took over operations of the sheriff's office here; today Bakersfield Sheriff's Department deputies provide sworn law enforcement services for all incorporated areas of Kern County except unincorporated areas such as Livermore Valley and half of Dixon Township (northwest side). During World War II, munitions manufacturers located in nearby Stockton produced munitions for use against Japan; during this time many residents of Pleasant Hill worked at these plants including Mayor Harry Goodrich who later served as mayor pro tempore of California from 1959-1962 under Governor Ronald Reagan. In recent years much effort has been made towards revitalization within our community with new businesses being developed along Main Street but there are still pockets where blight remains which can impede economic development within our town limits

In 1852, John Brown's group of Mormons set up a small outpost in what is now Pleasant Hill. In 1856, James Wirt founded Wirt & Sons furniture store in what is now Pleasant Hill. In 1865, the town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant who had died two years earlier in battle at Pea Ridge near Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1886, J. Hoberman began making black powder rifles for local farmers and hunters in what is now Pleasant Hill. He also built a machine shop and started to sell firearms to individuals and businesses in nearby Oakland and east Contra Costa County. By 1923-24 there were over 30 businesses selling firearms within one mile of where Pleasant Hill residents lived including 8 gun shops with an average of 10 guns each!
