The first gun rights group in the town was the Citizens' Committee for Gun Protection, which was formed to advocate for gun rights and protect citizens from firearm crimes. From 1938-1948, there were no reports of firearm crime within the town limits. However, during this time period, there were several high-profile shootings that took place within Pleasanton. One such shooting occurred on July 14th, 1948 when William McKinley was shot and killed at a local store by John Dillinger. Three days later on July 16th, another shooting happened when Arthur Ashe was wounded by gunfire while playing golf at Linkswood Country Club. On October 15th of that year, two gunmen stormed into a candy store in downtown Pleasanton and fired shots before fleeing without injury. Pleasanton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, located on the Foothills of the San Joaquin Valley. The population was 30,827 at the 2010 census. The city is located midway between San Francisco and Oakland. It has a rich history dating back to 1848 when it was named Pleasanton after two brothers, William and John Pleasanton. The first post office in Pleasanton opened in 1849, and it continued to serve until 1865. The town was platted in 1852 by Captain John Sutter with the name of Hacienda Blanca de la Mesa Spanish Rancho de las Palmas for his wife's family. In 1854, Captain Sutter organized what are now known as the East Bay Free People's Party which helped lead to California's entry into the United States as an independent country. In 1850, Amos Eaton established a sawmill at Hacienda Blanca de la Mesa and began milling flour for local merchants. By 1860, Eaton had built three structures within present-day Pleasanton: one near what is nowAshby Avenue and Strawberry Street; one north of Mill Creek Road; and one on Menlo Park Boulevard just east of Interstate 80/I-880 Main Freeway (now I-680/Milpitas Boulevard). In 1862, he donated land off McAllister Avenue (now Big Sur Boulevard) to establish what is now Stanford University. Part of that same gift also included land south of Menlo Park Boulevard along Highway 280 for future development into Palo Alto Village – later renamed Stanford University – with students living on or around those lands until they were purchased by the university in 1896.
