The factory was founded by George Washington Bailey in 1824 and produced binoculars until the early 1940s. The first binoculars made in Rancho Cordova were designed for use on horseback and were called “bineaters” because they could be worn over one eye while looking through a telescope. By the 1850s, however, people had started using binoculars for hunting and fishing as well. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed in China and Japan. As part of their military occupation, the Japanese took control of somebinocular factories in Rancho Cordova. The Americans quickly built a new plant to produce binoculars for their troops. In 1941, Rancho Cordova became an official city and began providing its residents with freebinoculars from its city hall tower. From then on, the city helped maintain and operate the local binocular factory until it closed in 1984. Today, only a few pieces of equipment from that old factory still remain at the site – including a small number of wooden bins used to store Binox glasses during production process).

The history of Rancho Cordova is reflective of that of much of California during its early years: A landowning elite established themselves here, working with Native Americans in productive partnerships who helped make this region one of the most agriculturally diverse on Earth. However, as gold began arriving in large quantities at the turn of the 19th century, these traditional relationships changed; man power came into conflict with nature over control over resources that were essential to both sides. This led to bloodshed and social upheaval as competing interests clashed within society; Ranchos Cordova’s founders would go on to play key roles in creating many late-19th century California landmarks such as Northridge Park and Adobe Walls.
Rancho Cordova was a cattle and sheep ranch located in the Monterey County area of California. The original land grant to Francisco de Anza, who named it Rancho Santa Clara, was in 1797. After his death in 1821, it passed through various hands until it was sold by Napa Valley businessman John Sutter to Elijah Cash in 1846. Cash divided the property among himself and his two sons, Nathan and John SwannsCash, selling off tracts until it became part of the 12 square miles (30 km²) appellation that includes today's Rancho Cordova.
