The name derived from its location on the Rialto River and its strategic position between two winegrowing regions in Southern California: Baja California and Northern California. The first European tosight the town was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 25, 1769 while exploring San Diego Bay. In 1873, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo founded what would become Rialto as a dry goods store and post office near present-day Victorville; it became an incorporated city on December 15, 1887. These days are marked by Mediterranean architecture with imposing white stone structures lining both sides of the wide river frontage that makes up much of downtown back then The City's rich history began when small farmers started growing crops on land east of Broadway Street in 1847; these early settlers were followed by others who built homes around this business district (now known as Downtown). By 1860 most of what exists today within Downtown had been erected including more than twenty businesses which lined Main Street between First and Second Streets. Townspeople began expanding out into other parts of San Bernardino County through annexation over time but during World War II they limited growth to protect their community’s military installations which were located just outside town limits at Point Mugu Naval Air Station and Menifee Army Airfield. When those bases closed down in 1991 all that remained was a few blocks along Main Street called “Downtown Rialto” which included many historic buildings dating back to pre-war days including the old Post Office Annex building now used as a museum Today Downtown Rialto features art galleries, restaurants, nightlife options such as theaters and bars/lounges as well as several historical landmarks including Mission Governor Manuel Fontana Hall (1868), Menifee High School (1912), Pershing Elementary School (1929) & Women’s Building (1936)

Edwin L. Aldrich of the United States Army's Balloon Corps during a military drill at Fort MacArthur. Theairship had been designed as an observation platform for aerial photography and mapping work in Southern California. After its inaugural flight, Rialto served as a training ship for early aviation pioneers such as Captain Jimmy Slatkin and Lieutenant Wilbur Wright who flew from it to test new airplane design theories in 1912-1913. In 1923, Rialto was sold to the government of Japan and renamed Kaga Maru; it served as a training vessel for Japanese pilots during World War II before being scrapped in 1946.
