In 1875, San Buenaventura Ventura was founded by the Spanish Franciscans. The area that is now Ventura County was part of Humboldt County until it was split in 1850 between Nevada and California. In 1875, a group of Spanish Franciscans who had been living in Northern California decided to move to Southern California and make their home in what is now Ventura County. They named the area after Saint Bonaventure, a friar from northern Italy who had helped spread Christianity in that region. The first firearms were not brought overland but were instead shipped overland from Mexico City. The Mexicanswho lived near Los Angeles were able to get hold of some of these firearms and began using them against American settlers. Around this time, the Mexican government began issuing licenses to Americans to sell guns. This event is known as the Californios’ War (1846-1848). At that time, guns were made primarily with muskets and pistols being the primary cartridges used for these firearms. Over time, however, shotguns began becoming more popular and so Smith & Sons started making shotguns as well. By 1910, they had become one of the largest Shotgun Manufacturers in the United States. In 1916, Smith & Sons moved their business to an old mill on Fourth Street which they continued to operate until 1949 when it was destroyed by fire.

On October 20th 1912 at 6:00 pm local time, an earthquake struck San Buenaventura Ventura County and resulting damage included minor injuries to those living near fault lines and destruction to homes and businesses throughout the city including nearly all of downtown which lay unfinished due to construction projects taking place at the time or related to other wars going on at that time such as World War I or World War II which were still unfolding. No loss of life occurred during this quake as is commonly reported however Los Angeles experienced significant damage with two major fires starting which burned down more than one hundred buildings in what would become known as "the Great Fire". In 1923 Mayor Antonio Perez defeated future State Senator Don Webb in a race for mayor against then Councilman Harry Lyon who won with 54%. In 1932 Mayor Enrique Gomez ran for re-election but lost against incumbent Harry Lyon by a wide margin becoming only the second person ever to lose an election while holding office in Ventura County after Lorenzo Thomas did so in 1916 when he unsuccessfully ran for Congress against then Speaker John D'Angelo also from Ventura County On February 8th 1934 La Paz Chavez became Acting City Manager following Mayor Enrique Gomez's retirement effective date due to ill health; La Paz Chavez would serve until his death on July 2nd 1943 when he was 92 years old It wasn't until 1958 when City Manager Arturo Sanchez came into office making him LA’s first Hispanic boss thereby solidifying Latino representation within government service throughOUT THE CITY OF VENTURA COUNTY . He would be succeeded by Edwin Meza who served from 1966-1974

The land that is now Ventura County was first settled by the Native Americans in early times. The area now comprising Ventura County was part of the Spanish Empire until 1821, when it became part of the United States of America. It was included in the Mexican Territory after Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821. In 1848, California became a state when it was gained from Mexico and Beale Air Force Base, which is located in East Ventura County, was established to support the American military presence in California.
