In 1906, when Santa Clara County was created from Contra Costa County, San Leandro became part of it. As a result of this change in county boundaries, much of what is now downtown San Leandro came under Oakland jurisdiction while most of its suburbs remained within Santa Clara County until recently when they were annexed by Berkeley. During World War II many munitions production plants were built here including United States Munitions Plant No.. 9 (now Kaiser Aluminum) and Douglas Aircraft Company's Baldwin Aviation Works No.. 281 (now McDonnell Douglas). Many Japanese-Americans also worked at these plants during World War II as slaves labor; however most were liberated before hostilities ended. Afterward many Japanese-American veterans moved into this community which began to grow rapidly with their new jobs opportunities following V-J Day (7 August 1945).
