As this growth continued new streets were built leading up towards downtown including Fifth Street (now Main Street),arriving from Monterey Park on Highway 101W near Coldwater Creek and Market Street just past Russian Hill before turning west on Mission Road until it reached Market Street again then turning south onto First Avenue until it arrived at Third Street where it terminated at Union Square across from City Hall square where today's Regency Hotel stands. In 1886 a fire destroyed much of downtown but not before causing many building additions including: Calvary Chapel (1887), Presbyterian Church (1893), Methodist Episcopal Church (1896), Baptist Churches South America Mission Society Building (1900), Central Catholic School (1906) The 1906 earthquake caused extensive damage with loss of life both inside and outside buildings which led to calls for stricter building codes throughout most of North America resulting in increased regulation during the 1920s through 1930s that remain an important aspect of modern day life in coastal Californian cities such as San Francisco Bay Area towns like Daly City or Richmond

Growth continued through the years until World War II when the munitions plant at Battersea closed and eliminated many jobs in town. however, many new businesses have started up since then such as arts and music venues; restaurants; and nightlife attractions like The Catalyst Ballroom nightclub which opened in 2006. In recent years there has been growth in housing developments such as Silicon Valley Housing located just north of town along Highway 1A
In 1847, the United States purchased Rancho San Rafael from José Castro. The land was used to graze sheep, but soon became a citrus orchard and wine-making region. In 1871, the city of Pasadena was founded on part of what is now San Rafael.
