San Rafael is a small city located in Marin County, California. It was founded on April 20, 1849 by James W. Richardson and his wife Anna Maria Richardson as the town of Ralston. In 1870, Mayor George Stephenson offered land for incorporation into the city so that San Rafaél could become an official city with its own police force and fire department. This offer was accepted and the city officially became an incorporated municipality on October 15, 1870. Over time, San Rafaél has continued to grow along with its economy while maintaining its unique character as a small town with rich history
The first post office in San Rafael was established on March 3, 1853. The town of San Rafael was organized on February 24, 1861. The first school was built in 1868 and the first telephone service was connected in 1912.
