The first Europeans to visit what is now Marin County were Missionaries of Charity who sailed up the Golden Gate in 1821 and established a small mission on Point Reyes Island. They left behind them a wealth of Padres and Franciscans who commenced Missions in various parts of Marin County over the next dozen years or so. In 1835-36 Antonio Maria Margarita de Zúñiga y Costilla founded Rancho Rinconada de las Pulgas (later Rancho del Rey) on Rinconada Point; it became part of San Rafael in 1881. In 1853 John Cranch discovered oil well near Bodega Bay and named it Rancho Colorado but no wells were drilled because he did not have the consent of the Mexican government to do so. He sold rights to an enterprising vintner named George Wright in 1865 for $5,000 (). At that time there were only 12 people living in San Ramon: six families from Rancho Colorado and six new ranch hands brought over by Wright. By 1870 there were 158 people living hereabouts including 54 children born within two months after arriving from Mexico City aboard the brigantine "Blessed Sacrament".

In 1824 John Cranch discovered oil shale near San Rafael and began production which led to rapid growth for the town during the late 1800s In 1846 Mexican forces invaded coastal California searching for gold but were repelled by Ulysses S Grant at Palo Alto before they could reach San Rafael On January 26, 1850 an act passed by Congress designated Yerba Buena Island (today's waterfront) within Golden Gate Park as part of what would become central Marin County On October 2, 1851 Mariposa Peak (now Mount Tamalpais) was sighted from Point Reyes Station during an expedition led by Lieutenant Commander Franklin Prentice Johnson After many failed attempts starting in 1853 various parties traveled up Mariposa Ridge finally reaching summit on November 10 participatedby American army Col Lewis Cass Gilbert who had been sent along to explore northwest coast wine country & make contacts with Native Americans
The city of San Rafael was founded in 1847 by pioneers who drove the first wagon train through the area. The city was named for Major General George San Rafael, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from California.
