Santa Barbara, California is a city located in the U.S. state of California on the Pacific coast of Northern California. Situated on the Santa Ynez Peninsula, it is bounded by San Luis Obispo County to the east and south, Ventura County to the west and north, and Santa Clara County to the northwest. The population was 57,221 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Santa Barbara were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew in 1542–43 when they sailed from Spain across the Strait of Magellan. The Spanish name for Santa Barbara was "Isla de la Cruz". In 1821, Alvarado discovered petroleum reserves near what is now known as downtown Santa Barbara; this led to increased development in that area over time. The town of Santa Barbara proper was founded on December 13, 1853 by Captain James Kapp with assistance from General Mariano Guerrero. It was named after Saint Bartolomé de las Casas who had been martyred in Mexico City during efforts against Spanish colonialism there some years earlier (1810). The first post office opened in 1855. After surveying much of Southern California before making any decisions about its location, Kapp selected what is now downtownSanta Barbara as its site based on several factors including available land and good water access." In 1860 Mayor Wm Henson approved plans for a public school system which would include a high school and three middle schools followed by four elementary schools; one for whites only (in East Village), two for Asians (in Downtown and South Park), one for Native Americans (in Rancho Cucamonga)and one for Mexicans (at Mission Bay). A special committee composed of twenty-four citizens chaired by Henson recommended that all low-income children be sent to school in homes or other areas adjacent thereto instead of attending special schools established for that purpose; this recommendation was accepted without objection by Mayor Henson." A fire destroyed most of downtownSantaBarbara on January 20th 1861 while powder storage tanks were being unloaded from wagons used by county commissioners going into town to view potential land grants nearby. No injuries resulted but $1 million worth of damage was done including gutters burst, roofs tiled off buildings, whole streets pocked with small holes etc.; total loss estimated at $5 million dollars Municipal Treasurer John Bostock organized an effort to rebuild using local resources within five weeks starting February 1st 1861 with a budget entitled "Rebuilding Operations Handbook" which cost $2K through private donations plus additional costs associated with fencing off lots damaged or destroyed during 1961 fire . . . ."Bostock also brought together architects Charles Portal & Sons who designed Building #3 currently used as Headquarters Department Store then went onto design Hull House prioritizing fire safety features above all else resulting in brick vaults between storefronts providing natural ventilation allowing today’s building design principles not contemplated back then." DowntownSantaBarbara experienced another fire occurred on November 17th 1936 destroying approximately 60%of structuresITself leaving behind an inventory value worth more than $200K today! The first permanent European settlement in what is now Santa Barbara County was made by Spanish missionaries on May 7, 1592 when they founded Mission San Buenaventura (now part of Pasadena). After nine years of work on December 8, 1776 by Father Junípero Serra (), MissionBernardo de Anza's second expedition arrived at Point Conception (present-day Ventura County) with 325 men under José Joaquín Morrone (). A group of soldiers named for General Antonio López de Legazpi who had led Mexican forces against Francisco Pizarro during the Peru–Mexico War were also landed here on November 29, 1777. From this point forward until 1821 there was continuous English presence here; however it gradually became Spanish with American occupation during that time The mission school closed down in 1871 but continued to be used as an Army depot until 1942 when it burned down due to faulty wiring . In 1984 two reconstructed missions were built: Friar Julian’s (built 1913) and Our Lady of Guadalupe (1929). They are both open to the public and remain one of the most popular tourist attractions in town. On January 14th 1870, local merchant John Wren convened a meeting to establish a form of government for what would become known as "City Of Santa Barbara". On December 5, 1876, Santa Barbara's first post office was established. The town was named for Saint Barbara of Assisi, an Italian Catholic saint who evangelized in the region. Santa Barbara became a city on December 12, 1907.
