Santa Paula is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mexican border and is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. Santa Paula was founded in 1849 by Mormon pioneers as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The first post office was established in 1850. In 1881, it merged with neighboring towns of Perris and Springville to form the new city of Santa Paula. The original mission built in what is now Santa Paula was dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto and operated from 1848 until 1862 under the direction of Father José Gomez de Arguello. A second mission, which served as an hospital for Mexicans during the Gold Rush period (1858-60), was built about 1900 by Bishop Lorenzo Snow and consecrated by Archbishop Liston Cushing of San Francisco on November 4, 1901A third mission house also stood erected about 1910 but failed to gain favor with local residents due to its similarity in design to several other buildings around town and its location near an open air swimming pool known as "Dirty Pool."
