Shafter, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about an hour and a half from Sacramento and about two hours from Fresno. The population was 1,814 as of the 2010 census. The community began as a farming settlement in 1851, when prospectors discovered gold near today's Shafter. Shafter, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,429 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Delaware-Tahoe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Shafter" comes from an early Spanish mission name for the area now known as Kern County. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Shafter were Mexican cattle ranchers who arrived in 1845. They named their rancho Rancho de las Animas (Rancho ofanimas). In 1848, American John C. Shaffer established a post office at the site which became known as Shafter after him. A school was opened there in 1862 and another one in 1868 before it closed its doors due to lack of pupils. A new school was built on land acquired by the government in 1889 and renamed Shaw Elementary School before it closed again due to lack of students in 1923. In 1886, Jens Jensen started a mercantile store and hotel near where he currently stands with his son Judd Thomas Jensen running it until 1927 when it burned down during a storm caused by heavy rains that year on December 12thstorming night just outside town limits
Shafter was founded in 1859 by Capt. George Shafter and his wife Mary, who also named the town after themselves. The Shavians, as the town's first permanent residents were called, arrived on horseback from Oregon to homestead in what is now central California. Captain Shafter and his men built a cabin near the present day intersection of State Route 62 and McKinley Boulevard in 1859. In 1861, Captain Shafter became Sheriff of Butte County which included parts of today’s Northern San Joaquin Valley. Ranching activity began around this time too, with local ranchers marketing their herds of Hereford cattle to farmers in California. By 1865, John Sutter had founded the Central Pacific Railroad at Redding and began shipping goods eastward through Shafter on its way to Sacramento. However, it wasn't until 1868 when General David Hunter acquired 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of right-of-way north of townline for $800 that railroads reached hereabouts full throttle. In 1870 riflemens from Fort Ord went into battle against Native Americans near Chico; they killed over 50 people before being driven off by cavalry under Lt Col John Broughton; however some members of the fort did return home with bullet wounds: one such man was Capt George Atherton (brought home as a child). To commemorate this event two flags were flown at half mast outside Old Fort Ord: one flew from Atherton's old barracks building on Castro Street (later demolished), while another flagpole stood atop an old Adobe Walls Store building located just east of town line on Stevenson Street today - both still standing reminders of that fateful day more than 60 years later! The community experienced rapid growth due to new transportation sources coming along – such as stagecoaches running betweenSacramento and Redding – which brought workers and families here for work during Tulare County’sgolden age! Goldrush Fever caused many early residents to leave for greener pastures elsewhere but Hastings loyalists stayed put until 1860 when they too succumbed to gold fever; many native tongues were spoken here before English replaced them permanently! Eventually most people moved away or converted to Christianity thanks to Methodist missionaries active throughout these days among Hastings' burgeoning population; by 1850 most churches had been erected with help from Father Edward Bunnell himself!
