The first bullet fired in Signal Hill was a .50 caliber ball fired from a cannonball launcher at a fairgrounds celebration on July 15, 1892. From then until World War II, Signal Hill's guns were used for target practice and other purposes. In 1917, when World War I ended, the military began training local civilians to use firearms for protection during wartime. In 1924, Signal Hill became home to the First United States Army Ammunition Plant which produced munitions for World War II. The plant closed in 1957 but its memory lives on through annual events such as the Armed Forces Day Parade and Festival that take place in nearby Carlsbad every May!

It is the largest city in San Bernardino County by population and the second-largest city by land area. The name Signal Hill comes from a hill in the town of Signal (now part of Riverside) that overlooked military installations in nearby Riverside and Ontario counties. The first post office called Signal Hill was established on February 14, 1876. The present town of Signal was platted in 1889. The original name for the town was "Riverside" because it sat on a branch of the Ranges River. In 1907, when Riverside became a separate municipality, its mayor decided to change the name to Signal Hill because no one could remember why "Riverside" had been chosen as the initial name for Signal Hill. In 1948, when San Bernardino County became an independent county, it set aside land east of Interstate 15 for a new city named after General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment known as Seventh Cavalry (later renamed First Infantry). On January 10, 1949, voters passed an ordinance naming Signal Hill as the new City of San Bernardino and setting aside $500,000 for fire protection and infrastructure development within five years. On March 4th of that year (the date still celebrated as City Day), Mayor John Fenton dedicated all available funds to begin construction on what would become one of California's most thriving cities – with over 22 thousand people now living there!

Signal Hill is a small, unincorporated community in eastern San Bernardino County, California. It lies on the east side of Signal Mountain, about 5 miles north of downtown San Bernardino and 8 miles south of Riverside. The town's ZIP code is 92334. The first post office at Signal Hill was established in 1892. By 1915, the population had grown to just over 20 people. At that time, Signal Hill was known as "the little village." The name change came about because the original railroad tracks ran through town, and people began referring to it as "signal hill" because of the many signals that could be seen from the road leading up to the mountain. In 1923, local farmers founded a flour mill in town which became one of the most important businesses in Signal Hill during its early years. The mill continued operation until it closed in 1966. In 1915, a water tower was erected near present-day Main Street and West First Avenue to serve Signal Hill and nearby communities such as Eastvale and Sycamore; however, this structure was destroyed by fire in 1922. In 1925, Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (now Intel) opened its largest manufacturing plant outside North America at what is now called Park Place; also located there were research laboratories and other engineering departments used by Intel executives during their work on semiconductors for electronic devices throughout World War II. The original courthouse building on Main Street was built around 1914-1915 when two old adobe buildings were combined into one structure for use as a courthouse; but it burned down in 1916-1917 after an arson attack by some locals who thought it would be replaced with a more expensive machine shop they were planning to build themselves. After being rebuilt using funds provided by local residents (and later purchased by CPU), the new courthouse served as both a court house and county jail from 1927 until 1987 when it too burned down luring away firefighters who had come to help put out another twigwood fire within minutes of arriving on site! After years of fundraising efforts led by then Mayor John Fenton ($5 million has been raised since he first became mayor in 1984), construction began on what will become today’s stately Main Street library Building 2 at 7th Ave/Main St., housed inside an actual pre-war Saddlebagge car dealership garage once owned by White Sands Mattress factory president Harry Hansen – making signal hill not only one stop on your drive from east san bernardino county but also home to one of san bernardino county’s newest cultural attractions!

Signal Hill was first settled by Native Americans in the mid-18th century and was originally called Point Bonita. In 1851, Commodore John F. Stockton built his first fort at Signal Hill after discovering sea routes to India through China and Japan. The fort served as a military outpost until 1853 when it was abandoned due to lack of defense against Indian attack. From 1854 until 1855, Signal Hill was home to both an American school and a naval hospital before being sold to the public in 1856. The town developed around this military garrison until 1865 when it became an incorporated village under the name of San Francisco. In 1870, Signal Hill became part of postcard company headquarters before revert back to its original name in 1888 when Western Electric Company moved their company offices from Oakland to San Francisco. The hill has been used for many different purposes over the years including as a landfill, housing developments, and an amusement park before being bought by the city for use as a public park with same name in 1959.
