South El Monte, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,319 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city is located on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties and shares borders with Ontario and Compton to the north, Agoura Hills to the east, Northridge to the south and West Covina to the west. The name "South El Monte" is derived from Spanish meaning "south of mountains". This appellation was given because it was located on what are now two mountain ranges which run parallel to each other: The Santa Ana Mountains to the east and Playa del Carmen Mountain Range to the west. The first permanent residents of South El Monte were Mexican citizens who had come overland from Baja California in 1833. They called their land Rancho Buena Vista which means "happy valley." In 1864, US president Abraham Lincoln approved a bill authorizing Calafia Land Grant Parish (now Orange County) to sell 640 acres (248 hectares) of land within South El Monte for $5 per acre ($2/acre). ThisPurchase set off a series of land purchases by various individual investors until 1881 when 704 acres (269 hectares) became part of South El Monte town limits. In 1912 an irrigation canal was constructed through South El Monte by entrepreneur John D’Angelo; this helped increase crop yields in local fields while making water available for farming in nearby drylands. By 1930 citrus production accounted for nearly one-half of all agricultural production in Southern California; during World War II it produced military supplies such as aircraft parts and munitions necessary for Japanese war efforts. It wasn't until after World War II that many factories closed down or moved away following changes in technology that made agriculture more difficult than it had ever been before; however, some new businesses did emerge including furniture stores and restaurants along with pharmacies, religious organizations and real estate firms. South El Monte is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino– Riverside–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The South El Monte Chamber of Commerce has declared South El Monte "The Business Capital of Southern California." The town of South El Monte was platted in 1887 by George Hildebrand and James Wacker as a farming community on Rancho Los Alamos north-of downtown Los Angeles. In 1912, about 10 percent of the residents were Italians who had come to work on Pico Boulevard near what is now Western Avenue. They began to move out in the 1920s when they became political refugees from other parts of southern California. In 1926, Harry Chandler bought an acre lot at 6000 West Skinner Street for $1,000 and built two houses there which became known as Chandler's Towers. He leased them to farmers who grew grapes and made wine from them before selling their product to retailers such as Sam Woolridge and Harmon Kardon in Southern California. By 1945, most of Chandler's buildings had been destroyed by fire but he still owned his towers and continued to lease them out until his death in 1978. In 1951 Catalina College opened its doors in nearby Simi Valley and many students took advantage of Chandler's towers for dormitory rooms; gradually they fell into disrepair until Assemblyman Don Frye (D-Los Angeles) acquired them in 1984 as part of his campaign trail stop at Northridge High School during the 1984 election cycle. In 1943, during World War II, South El Monte was an important naval base for the Pacific Fleet. The city also played an important role in post-war reconstruction and development as a center for housing and industry. Today, South El Monte is home to about 26,000 people and is one of California's most diverse cities with over 60 nationalities represented among its population.
