South El Monte is a city in southern California, located on the border of Los Angeles County and Orange County. The population was 34,951 as of 2010. It is the most populous city in Santa Ana County, and second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. The first humans to live in what is now South El Monte were the Tongva people who lived there before Spanish conquistador Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo came through that area in 1542. There are references to the area from 600 BC when Tongva traders trade with the Chumash people up the coast of San Diego Bay. The original name for this location may have been "Tongvañá," which means "place where many trees grow." In 1821, Mexican land grants were given to American farmers by Mexico City based on their discoveries of gold near Nuestra Señora de las Llanuras Creek. When California became a United States country, these grants became part of US territory and were not ceded back to Mexico until 1912 when President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 4887 giving all such land east of Redondo Beach to Pasadena. The first white settler in what would become South El Monte was John Fitch who arrived with his family from Stockton, California on October 20th, 1877 at Rancho Rinconada (now known as Foothill Ranch). He started a small ranch and grew grapes while also working on his property holdings which extended into today’s south side of town along Paseo del Rio Real near Mission Viejo Boulevard/Clarence Street. This block contained several businesses including: The Grapesvine Nursery & Vineyard (later changed its name Neruda Nursery), Mrs Muller's Drug Store (later dissolved), Joe's Pizza Place ( later bought out by Domino's Pizza), Pacific Gas & Electric Company Headquarters Building #3/4 - still standing today across Mission Boulevard from Staples Center (!), and finally Harry Wasserstein’s Hardware store – now much reduced but still extant across Mission Blvd from Staples Center! All these businesses continue operations even though they are no longer physically located inside South ElMonte limits! North Park was razed around 1915-16 for new housing although some evidence remains suggesting that early portions of it may have been rebuilt over time! The area now known as South El Monte was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The Rancho San José de los Cerritos, a land grant given to Juan Vizcaino in 1821, was the most important early cattle ranch in the region. In 1835, Mexican nationals Manuel Nieto and his brother Estanislao bought 3,000 acres of Rancho San José from Vizcaino. They began settlement of this area and named it for their various kinfolk back home in Veracruz – the name “South El Monte” being derived from an Apache word meaning “the place where they were born”. During the late 1800s and into the mid-19th century, there were significant population growth rates in South El Monte due to its strategic location as a crossing point on two major trade routes - Interstate 5 and State Route 106. One saw waves of new settlers arrive during agricultural Gold Rush years; however, another wave began arriving during World War II as American soldiers arrived to fight for General Douglas MacArthur. As this influx continued over time, social tensions started to build up between Anglo (American) citizens living near Mexican immigrants while also developing close relationships with their own nativist/conservative counterparts within California's Chicano community. In 1960, after more than 50 years of annexation by Los Angeles County, South El Monte became fully annexed into LA when then-Governor Pat Brown signed legislation annexing all unincorporated areas east of I-5 within LA county limits without going through public hearings or review by elected officials or any independent body such as a commission or board like those that had been established since vecinos formed associations centuries earlier to manage local affairs at their own pace without interference from outside interests (see History of Los Angeles County). This act effectively eliminated any remaining vestiges of local autonomy within what is nowLA COUNTY while legally granting unto LA county all jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas east of I-5 - including much of what is now eastern Riverside County - making it one big city with less representation for rural residents who had always felt left out and increasingly impoverished since annexation.
